Performance Tuning Azure SQL Data Warehouse

Azure SQL Data Warehouse is Microsoft's Data Warehouse as a Service product in Azure. Offering large compute and unlimited storage capability, it can handle the largest data warehousing workloads in the world. While it is a managed service, performance is still responsibility of the client's DBA and developers. Because of it's distributed architecture, Azure SQL DW is tuned in a way that is different from single-node database engines like SQL Server and sometimes adding more nodes is not the right answer. Therefore, for a successful implementation, it is critical to understand how to optimize the performance of the system and manage cost at the same time. In this demo-heavy session we will do a high level overview of the system architecture and do demos of how to optimally load data, how to distribute it properly and look at distributed execution plans that highlight the optimizations.
