Baselining and Performance Comparison with PAL

A common complaint heard by DBAs is "the system is slow and we think it's the database". But is it really the database? How do we quantify what is good and what is slow?

To be able to face this type of scenario in a scientific and logical way, we need to have a proper baseline of our system. And once we have the baseline we also need to be able to compare it to the current situation and decide the best course of action.

The PAL tools enable both of these scenarios by allowing easy capture of relevant performance metrics and even easier analysis of the values. In this session we will go over how to setup a Perfmon trace based on the PAL template for baselining and performance analysis, we will go through the analysis generated by PAL and the main performance counters to look for in your SQL Server performance analysis.
